SCJ Report: This Summer’s Valuable Experience

When I participated in J.LIVE Talk in November 2019, I wanted to challenge my Japanese language skills, so I chose the topic omoiyari, or “consideration”, and gave a presentation. It was an even more wonderful experience than I could have ever imagined, but I would have never thought I would win an award. However, to my surprise, I was able to win the Gold award in the advanced category. Because I won this category, thanks to J.LIVE, I was able to attend SCJ, a six week intensive Japanese
program at International Christian University.

At SCJ, I was in the most advanced class, C7, and it was probably the hardest Japanese class I’ve ever taken. However, there were only two students and two teachers in my class, so because we were such a small group, we were able to read about a lot of interesting themes and discuss them openly.

In our course, we read and discussed reading materials on six different topics. We had the opportunity for us students as opposed to teacher to choose our own topics for class discussion. We chose religion and disasters as our two themes.

I was very surprised to learn that there are people who live the life of a mountain priest and a businessman, and I was also very moved to learn that in Kawagoe City, where I studied abroad in the past, there is a temple that holds same-sex weddings. Also, I have never studied about disasters before, but since I will be moving to Kamaishi in November, a city which was severely damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, I wanted to learn more about disasters and Kamaishi. It was a great learning experience because I was able to connect it to my future life, and I think it will be very useful for my upcoming job!

In addition to reading and discussion, I was able to participate in some very interactive study activities, such as debates, mock interviews, and a unique form of Japanese theatre. I also conducted a personal research project. During these activities, I often had the opportunity to interact with SCJ students, which I really enjoyed.

Over the past six weeks, I have often thought of J.LIVE Talk; both SCJ and J.LIVE are not only focused on studying and language skills, but also on creating opportunities for people to interact and bring their opinions and what they want to talk about onto the stage. In everyday life, interacting and communicating with others can be quite difficult, but at SCJ I was able to learn communication skills on difficult topics, for which I am very grateful. From now on, I would like to apply the skills I have acquired through SCJ and J.LIVE Talk to my work in Kamaishi City Hall as a Coordinator of International Relations. And as I said in my J.LIVE Talk two years ago, I would like to do my best to be a person who has ‘omoiyari’ or thoughtfulness in my daily life.

SCJのレポート:この夏の貴重な経験

2019年の11月のJLIVE Talkに参加した私が自分の日本語力をチャレンジしたかったので、「思いやり」というテーマを選んで、プレゼンテーションをしました。想像以上素晴らしい経験でしたが、優勝すると思いませんでした。しかし、上級の金賞を取れて、とても驚きました。J.LIVEのおかげで、国際キリスト大学でSCJという6週間の日本語の夏のプログラムに参加することができました。

SCJでは一番上級なC7のクラスに入ることになり、とても難しかったです。しかし、C7のクラスでは学生二人と先生二人だけのクラスになっていましたので、この少人数だったからこそ、たくさん面白いテーマについて読んだり話したりできました。

私たちのコースでは、6つテーマに関する読解教材読んで、ディスカッションをしました。その中にはクラスでのディスカッションのために、先生ではなく、私たち学生自身がテーマを決めるという機会がありました。私たちは2つテーマとして、宗教と災害を選びました。

山伏とサラリーマンの生活をしている人がいるということを学び、とても驚いたし、昔の留学先の川越市では同性結婚式を行っているお寺についても勉強して、とても感動しました。または、災害についても勉強したことがないのですが、今年2011年に東日本大震災の津波で大きな被害を受けた釜石に11月に移住することになりますので、災害の知識や釜石についての情報も深めたいと思いました。私の将来に繋げることができたので、とてもいい勉強だったし、今度の仕事にも役に立つと思います。

読解とディスカッション以外、とてもインタラクティブ的な勉強のアクティビティもできました。例えば、ディベートや模擬面接や演劇の勉強などです。または個人的な研究プロジェクトもしました。こういうアクティビティをしていた時、よくSCJの学生と関わる機会があって、とても楽しかったです。

この6週間に渡って、よくJ.LIVE Talkを思い浮かびました。SCJもJ.LIVEも勉強と言語力だけに集中しているわけではなく、人々の意見や話したいことを舞台に上げて、交流を作る機会を作っています。日常生活では、他の人と交流して、コミュニケーションをするのが、なかなか難しいことですが、SCJでは難しいトピックについてコミュニケーション力を学ぶことができたので、とても感謝しています。これから、SCJとJ.LIVE Talkで身に付いたスキルを釜石の国際交流員の仕事に活かしたいと思います。そして、2年前のJ.LIVE Talkで言ったように「思いやりある人間」として頑張っていきたいと思っています。
