About the conference

The 38th North American Conference on Chinese Linguistics

The North American Conference on Chinese Linguistics is the main academic platform for Chinese language and linguistics research in North America, attracting participants from other continents as well. The George Washington University is hosting NACCL-38 in Washington, D.C.

The theme for NACCL-38 is "Chinese Language and Linguistics in the Age of AI". Debates on modern linguistics and its relation to AI go back decades (e.g. Lakoff 1978). Recent breakthroughs in AI, however, have created new challenges and opportunities for linguistics (e.g. Piantadosi 2023, Chesi 2025). In the field of Chinese language and linguistics, AI tools have become increasingly important in research from corpus linguistics, phonetic analysis, to second language acquisition and pedagogy. Additionally, Chinese linguistics can contribute to more effective AI applications, and more rigorous research methods are needed.

In light of these challenges and opportunities in the age of AI, we are especially interested in new research related to AI from descriptive, theoretical, experimental, computational or applied perspectives. Presentations not related to the conference theme are equally invited and considered.
