Sponsor School: International Christian University (ICU)

International Christian University (ICU) holds as its mission the establishment of an academic tradition of freedom and reverence based on Christian ideals as well as the cultivation of internationally minded citizens who perform service to God and humankind and make contributions to lasting peace. The Japanese Language programs (JLP) have been an integral element of the University since the latter’s founding in 1953 and was the first such program to be offered for credit in Japan. The programs have two fundamental academic objectives: to equip students with i) the requisite skills, in both their academic and social activities both on and off campus, to be able to conduct a meaningful student life in communion with others; and ii) the Japanese linguistic ability upon graduation or at the conclusion of their studies at ICU commensurate with making a significant contribution to society whether within Japan or overseas.

*Under the continued uncertainty about the COVID-19 pandemic, we must alert you to the following possibility regarding the college-level Gold Awards:

There is a (remote) possibility that the in-person summer programs in the hosting institutions may be cancelled in the summer of 2025. If this happens, the ticket for the travel will be cancelled, and the winner will not receive any compensation for it. In addition, for the winner to keep the stipend, (1) either he/she will have to participate in a virtual summer program offered by the hosting institution (if such is offered), or (2) (if no summer program is offered by the hosting institution) spend part of the stipend to participate in a comparable summer program elsewhere, either virtual or in person. In the case of (2), the winner will have to provide proof of attendance and completion in order to keep the stipend.
