As in the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, we may be able to offer an additional award called the Kakehashi Award with the full sponsorship of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan, Washington DC.
The prize of the Kakehashi Award is an all-expenses-paid group tour of Japan possibly early in 2022. This tour is fully sponsored and organized by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan, Washington DC.
One College-Division finalist will be selected from all eligible* college-division finlists by the Final Round judges on the basis of his/her suitability to represent the United States as a “friendship ambassador” and on the merit of the topic and delivery of his/her Final Round talk.
*The awardee of the Kakehashi award must be a US citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. In addition, the awardee may not have participated in any previous Kakehashi or a similar Japanese-government-funded program. Nor can she/he have stayed or studied in Japan for more than one year cumulatively.
